Andrew Wellington has posted to the MacEnterprise list a contribution to the Mac community called Software Update Enabler. The following is his post.
"Hi all,
In many settings it is desirable to be able to use a local software update server, but not have the computer managed by a
central server. This was a particular problem at ANU, as we have a large number of Macs that aren't centrally managed
(eg, Student supplied notebooks, college residents, etc). Apple doesn't provide a documented way to do this with Tiger's
Software Update Server, so I set out to create a way to enable Software Update to use a local server on any machine.
You can download Software Update Enabler from http://www.wiretapped.net/~proton/suenabler/index.html.
The source code is also available on the site under a BSD-style license, so do with it what you like.
The application sets a preference that Apple has provided (but not documented) called "CatalogURL" with the server you supply
after verifying that does appear to be running a Software Update Server.
Enjoy!
Andrew
