Now that Intel Macs are shipping, many administrators have noticed that the Apple Remote Desktop administrative application will not run. Fortunately, a solution exists!
Recently, there have many posts about how to use the ARD 2.2 application. The solution is simple:
1. Remove the entire directory structure at:
/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement
2. Launch the Apple Remote Administration application. It will now repair itself, re-populating the RemoteManagement directory with a version of the ARDAgent which can be properly supported.
Why not use Rosetta?
Applications within the Support structure of the ARDAgent application may not necessarily function correctly, including the systemsetup, networksetup and kickstart binaries, as unix binaries cannot be forced to run in Rosetta. Additionally, when the ARDAgent is removed, the Remote Desktop application support files are re-created in a known working configuration, without the 2.2.1 update for Intel based Macintosh hardware.
What version of Apple Remote Desktop should be running?
Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 or higher
How does this work?
Apple Remote Desktop has the ability to heal itself if components are damaged. Removing the RemoteManagement folder will allow the administrative application to run the repair utility found at:
/Applications/Remote Desktop.app/Contents/Support
