Ever wonder why the MCX Cache settings are set to 17 days?
I certainly did, as it made no sense to have a value of 17 days. Whenever a change in made to the user, computer, or group preferences (in the OD master) with Workgroup Manager, the client mcx cache will be refreshed when the next loginwindow is shown, or a user logs in.
If you make preferences changes with another tool, the client will not detect the changes and will not refresh the mcx cache. For example, if the machine is bound to Active Directory plugin and does not use any other management, the cache will be refreshed about once a day.
If the preferences do not change, the mcx cache is refreshed at the next loginwindow or login after the following formula:
cache refresh time = previous cache refresh time + (login time / 2)
Because of this setting, it is generally most desirable to keep the cache refresh time as long as tolerable. With a default setting of 17 days / 2, the cache will refresh approximately every 8 days.
Note, the cache time should never be set to zero, as that will cause the client to be completely unmanaged when it is not on the network.
