Troubleshooting Portable Home Directories E-mail
Written by Philip Rinehart

A while ago, an article about how to troubleshoot Workgroup Management (MCX) with a MCXDebug setting.  Here's how to do the same thing with Portable Home Directories.

FIrst, as with MCX, Mirror Agent has a setting using the defaults command.  Here's how to enable it:

defaults write com.apple.MirrorAgent debugOutput 4

Although the value above is shown as 4, it can be set at any level between 0 and 4.  This command writes debugging information to the MirrorAgent.log, found in ~/Library/Logs.

A second quick thing that can be done is a force reset of the synchronization database.  It's very simple, simply hold down option-click when logging in.  The entire database will be reset.

I tried logging into a mobile user, entered pw, then option down while proceeding and was presented with the Workgroup arbitration screen. This doesn\'t mean that the db reset didn\'t happen, but there was no feedback to that effect. I\'d also like to set the sync direction to favor the client in every instance. I know John DeTroye was going to provide that info in an upcoming T&T, but I haven\'t seen it. Thanks.
